Far from the crowds and chaos of Goa's beaches, this beautiful waterfall offers a peaceful escape into nature. Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary

Situated in Sanguem Taluka of South Goa, Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary spans around 211 km². It forms a key corridor in the Western Ghats, neighboring other reserves like Cotigao and Bhagwan Mahavir. The sanctuary features thick moist-deciduous forests interspersed with evergreen pockets, peppered with perennial streams and ancient Myristica swamps.

Waterfall Trio: Mainapi, Savari & Sonal

Netravali village is home to three perennial waterfalls—Mainapi, Savari, and Sonal—all feeding into the Netravali River, a tributary of the Zuari. Sonal Waterfall is a hidden gem, lesser-known than Dudhsagar but spectacular in its own right. Accessed via a 6km trek starting from Netravali village, passing through tribal hamlets and dense forest. The trail is rated moderate: expect to cross streams, deal with leeches and mud (especially in monsoon), but the reward is a stunning waterfall plunge pool.

Flora & Fauna

  • Mammals: Gaur (Indian bison), Malabar giant squirrel, four-horned antelope, leopards, and black sloth bears.
  • Birds: Malayan night heron, Great pied hornbill, Nilgiri wood pigeon, grey-headed bulbul.
  • Butterflies: Malabar banded swallowtail, peacock, tree nymph, southern birdwing.
  • Unique amphibian: The Vulnerable Indirana salelkari (Netravali leaping frog).

Best Time to Visit

Monsoon magic (June to September): Roaring waterfalls, lush greens, and dramatic scenery—but also leeches and challenging footing.
