About
Origins and Significance
The Calangute Church stands prominently amid a backdrop of swaying palm branches. Its orientation is such that its front faces the emerging sun, while its rear gazes out towards the expanse of the Arabian Sea. With a history spanning over four centuries, the Church in Calangute holds a rich legacy. The first humble chapel with thatched palm leaves was constructed in 1576. Due to the growing number of parishioners, subsequent structures were erected, leading to the present-day St. Alex Church built in 1741.
Architectural Marvels
The Church's towering spires and its decorative false dome leave an indelible artistic impression. Inside, the church boasts an impressive array of seven altars. The primary altars are flanked by an additional four altars lining the sides. The central altar houses the Patron Saint, St. Alex, holding his beggar's bowl.
A standout feature is the pulpit, styled in Rococo fashion and transported from St. Boaventura College in Old Goa. It represents a vision of white-and-gold, embodying the elegance of Rococo in a mystical flamboyance. Additionally, the Grotto of Our Lady of Lourdes within the churchyard is believed to be the first grotto dedicated to the Blessed Virgin in all of Goa.
Life of St. Alex
Born to a virtuous Roman senator, St. Alex was raised with a belief in utilizing prosperity to aid the less fortunate. He lived humbly as a beggar near a church, and his identity was only discovered upon his passing. His life of poverty and charity mirrored the ideals of the Franciscans who evangelized the region, leading to the devotion that continues today.
