The Mangueshi Temple, also known as Shri Mangesh Temple, is one of the most prominent and ancient Hindu temples in Goa, India. It is located in the village of Mangeshi, which is approximately 22 km from the state capital, Panaji, and is situated in the Ponda taluka of North Goa district.
Mangueshi Temple Legend and Mythology
Like many sacred places, the Mangueshi Temple carries a fascinating legend steeped in mythology. According to local folklore, Lord Shiva took the form of a tiger to scare his wife Parvati. Paravati, who was frightened at the sight of the tiger, went in search of Shiva and cried out, "Trahi Mam girisha!" (Oh Lord of Mountains, save me!). Upon hearing the words, Shiva turned himself back to his normal form. The words "mam girisha" became associated with Shiva and over time the words got abbreviated to Manguirisha or Manguesh.
Mangueshi Temple Architecture
As we approach the temple, its architectural grandeur leaves us in awe. The main structure boasts a unique blend of Hindu and Goan influences. The entrance greets us with a striking seven-story Deepastambha, carved meticulously from black stone, illuminating the temple grounds with its radiant light during auspicious occasions.
The temple itself features an exquisite sanctum sanctorum housing the sacred linga of Lord Mangesh. Intricate wooden pillars and ceilings add a touch of elegance to this spiritual abode.

- By Road: The temple is well-connected by road and can be easily reached by car or bus from major cities in Goa. It is located on NH748, approximately 22 km from Panaji.
