Anant Temple Savoi-Verem Story

The small village of Savoi-Verem in Ponda taluka is the site of the only temple dedicated to Lord Anant in the state of Goa. The temple is about 45 kilometres away from the capital city of Panaji.

This temple nestled in the green fields of horticulture is built inside a sacred lake. Lord Anant is the incarnation of Lord Vishnu and is said to have arrived in the village through a canoe. Villagers, at the Lord's arrival, got so happy that they uprooted the plants of betel nuts, which are abundantly available in the village and started dancing with joy.

The Madanant temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, appearing here in his incarnation as Ananta, the serpent. The idol of the deity is carved in black stone and Lord Vishnu is shown here in his Anantashayya (a sleeping position where the Lord rests on the multi-headed snake king Seshnaga, whose heads shelter the head of the Lord like an umbrella). This is the only temple in Goa showing Lord Vishnu in this special posture.

Anant Temple Goa

The architecture of the Anant Temple is a fine example of traditional Goan Hindu temple design, showcasing intricate craftsmanship and attention to detail. The inner sanctum houses the idol of Lord Anant depicted reclining on the serpent Shesha. This serene and majestic form of Vishnu is beautifully crafted and worshipped with great reverence. The temple features a spacious Sabha Mandap (assembly hall) where devotees gather for prayers and religious ceremonies. The hall is adorned with wooden carvings and traditional motifs.

A tall lamp tower (deepstambha) stands prominently in the temple courtyard, often lit during festivals, creating a divine ambience. A sacred tank (pushkarni) is located near the temple, used for ritualistic bathing and purification by devotees before entering the temple.

Festivals and Celebrations

A famous week-long festival of Lord Ananta's is Sakhyahari Kalotsav popularly known as Verecho Skhyahari celebrated annually in the month of December. The Festival kick starts in the evening with Lord Ananta's palanquin paying a visit to the temples of Lord Sateri at Savoi-Verem, Lord Shantadurga at Saterbhat and Lord Narayana at Bhatola to invite the deities for Sakhyahari Kalotsav. As the Lord's palanquin moves through various villages, the devotees from each town will accompany the palanquin, dancing to the tune of drums and other musical instruments. This is the annual festival celebrated in the village wherein the devotees dance by carrying betelnut plants in their hands, chanting 'hari re majhya panduranga, sakhyahari mhajya panduranga' aloud.

Lord Ananta's palanquin, on its return journey from Bhatolem, visits every house that falls on the path and gives blessings to the family. Lakhs of devotees from Goa as well as the outside crowd to the village to seek the blessings of Lord Madananta. The festival, which will begin with Sakhyahari Kalotsav followed by Sangdotsav, will continue with the Lord sitting in the chariot of Eagle, Horse, Elephant, Lion and finally on the chariot of Cobra.

The other significant event in the temple's calendar is Anant Chaturdashi, celebrated 10 days after Ganesh Chaturthi. This festival marks the worship of Lord Anant, with elaborate rituals, processions, and offerings.
