History Of Terkhol Fort

Despite his efforts, the Portuguese regained control of the fort, and it was eventually abandoned when they left. During the freedom fight of 1961, the fort became a base for freedom fighters, and today, there is a memorial in honor of those who fought for the liberation of Goa. The fort's surroundings are adorned with ancient trees, adding to its historical charm. In the present day, the remains of the fort have been transformed into a hotel known as Terekhol Fort Heritage, preserving its rich history while offering a unique lodging experience. It is believed that the fort was originally crudely built by Khem Sawant Bhonsle, the Raja of Sawantwadi, in the 17th century. The fort came in Portuguese hands in 1746 when the Portuguese navy defeated fleet on Sawant's. It became an important fort for maritime defence right through its occupation of Goa. The fort has been renovated and converted as hotel. It houses a chapel dedicated to St. Anthony.
