About

Ponda Fort

Ponda Fort, also known as the Ponda Fort or the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary Fort, is located in the Ponda region of Goa. The Marathas built it in the 17th century to defend the area against Portuguese invasion. While much of the fort's structure has eroded over time, its remnants, including large stone walls and gates, still stand as a testament to Goa's historical defence architecture. The fort is surrounded by scenic natural beauty, making it a quiet spot for visitors interested in history and nature. Ponda Fort's historical importance is amplified by its association with the famed Maratha leader Chhatrapati Sambhaji, who was involved in battles to reclaim parts of Goa from Portuguese control.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Fort

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Fort, also known as Farmagudi Fort, is located near Farmagudi in Ponda, Goa, and holds historical and cultural significance tied to the Maratha Empire's resistance against Portuguese rule. Constructed during the late 17th century, possibly under the rule of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the fort served as a defensive post for Maratha-held territories. Named in honour of the legendary Maratha king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, it symbolizes his enduring influence, even though he did not personally build it. A prominent statue of Shivaji Maharaj on horseback stands at the entrance, attracting visitors as a tribute to the great warrior king's legacy. Though much of the original fort is now in ruins, the site offers scenic views of Ponda's lush surroundings and a peaceful ambience, making it a popular destination for history enthusiasts and those exploring Goa's Maratha heritage.

Battle of Ponda Fort

The Battle of Ponda Fort in 1675 was a significant conflict between the Maratha Empire, led by Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, and the Portuguese, who controlled large parts of Goa. Shivaji, aiming to expand Maratha's influence and resist European powers, launched an attack on the strategically important fort. Despite showcasing the Marathas' renowned guerrilla warfare tactics and breaching Portuguese defences, the Portuguese managed to retain control of the region temporarily. Although not a decisive victory for the Marathas, the battle symbolized Shivaji's determination to challenge foreign dominance in the region. The Marathas continued their efforts to reclaim Goa under Shivaji's successor, Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, leaving a lasting legacy in Goa's history.
